Congress Approves Accelerated Tax Deduction For Haiti Earthquake Relief
Taxpayers making monetary contributions in early 2010 to help Haiti after the devastating January 12 earthquake will be able to claim a deduction on their 2009 federal tax returns. The House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 4462 on January 20 to allow taxpayers to claim a charitable deduction on their 2009 returns for qualified Haiti disaster relief contributions made after January 11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010. The Senate approved the measure on January 21, and President Obama is expected to sign it when it reaches the White House. Online Holiday Giving to Exceed $4 Billion; Despite Economy More Consumers Plan to Give Online in ‘09 than ‘08
Convio, Inc estimates that US online giving to nonprofit organization will be more than $4 billion during the holiday season of 2009 as more than 111 million online consumers say they plan to give via the Internet this year. An omnibus survey conducted by Forrester Research for Convio, reveals that in the US more than 63% of online consumers plan to use the Internet to donate to charities of their choice during the upcoming holiday season, up from 51% in 2008.
