IDOC and Tech Nonprofit Join Forces to Enhance Public Safety Duy Pham

A collaboration between the Idaho Department of Correction and a tech nonprofit, Recidiviz, is helping to make the state's correctional system more effective. Founded in 2018, Recidiviz was created by a former Google product manager, Clementine Jacoby, with the goal of easily identifying those who pose a low risk to public safety so that more resources can be allocated to those who pose a higher risk. IDOC has been working with Recidiviz for the past three years to improve the supervision of those on probation and parole. Before the partnership, officers had to spend hours each month searching through multiple databases to determine which clients needed assessment, home visits, or drug tests.

While the partnership between IDOC and Recidiviz is a step in the right direction, it is important to consider the potential implications of relying on technology to make decisions about public safety. Technology can be a powerful tool, but it is not infallible and can be subject to bias. It is essential that any decisions made about public safety are based on accurate and unbiased data.
