eTapestry Strives for Eco-Friendly Office

eTapestry, a division of Blackbaud Inc. (Nasdaq: BLKB), announced the launch of GreenTap, a committee formed to start introducing the office and fellow co-workers to an environmentally-focused path. Created in July 2008, The GreenTap committee is dedicated to going green and seeking improvements of eco-friendly management procedures.

Becoming eco-friendly is not just a good habit, it is essential for all of us in preserving our future resources, said Jay Love, eTapestry president and CEO.  I am proud to see how this banner has been taken up by our employees. The difference it has made in the office has empowered employees to make changes at home as well.

When GreenTap contacted a local garbage/recycling pickup service for help, a recycling receptacle measuring 8 cubic yards was dropped off at the eTapestry office. eTapestry's goal is to gather at least 1 ton of recycled material per month. Each employee received a personal recycling container for his or her desk and the committee is also setting up a recycling station in each employee kitchen area.

In addition to the items picked up by the recycling service, eTapestry will also:
  • Set up areas to recycle other items like batteries, plastics #3 - #7, glass and non-corrugated cardboard
  • Recycle plastic bags into reusable bags, providing a way to reuse a common household trash item
  • Encourage employees to turn off lights as they exit conference rooms or offices
  • Use reusable cups instead of disposable cups and lessen the use of plastic utensils
  • Make efforts to carpool and ride bikes to work

GreenTap is not stopping there. Plans for future green initiatives and incentives are in development. Some of these include offering priority parking to those employees who carpool, providing reusable cups to all employees (which will be made of biodegradable materials), monitoring building temperatures, reducing the lighting used throughout the office, and switching out paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms with hand blowers. eTapestry is also encouraging employees to take advantage of the opportunity to work from home in order to reduce carbon emissions.

We plan to send out monthly newsletters and GreenTap Tip of the Week emails in order to keep eTapestry employees thinking about the changes that have been made and what else each person can do to reduce our eco-footprint as a company, said Elaine DeaKyne, GreenTap chairperson. We're helping our business and our employees make greener choices, empowering them with the education, resources and encouragement to be green.

Since the GreenTap committee's inception, eTap has consistently emptied about two 32-gallon bins of recyclable material twice each week, all of which would have originally gone in the trash.
