GiveGab, the volunteering network, announced today the launch of its new mobile app for iPhone users worldwide. GiveGab’s app provides volunteers, nonprofits, businesses, colleges and others with ways to instantaneously and remotely connect and share volunteer opportunities and activities. The free iOS app will enable volunteers to find and sign up for thousands of service opportunities, log their service hours and interact socially in new ways, wherever they are located.

 With GiveGab’s new app, users will be able to:
  • discover and remotely sign up for new volunteering opportunities nearby and throughout the nation – more than 400,000 nonprofits are accessible through GiveGab, with thousands of local volunteer opportunities;
  • connect with other volunteers and organizations who share their interests;
  • post comments, photos and reflections to share their volunteer experiences;
  • interact with other users in the app’s social newsfeed--"The Gab";
  • create a personalized volunteer portfolio by logging hours, adding photos and commentary; and, show their appreciation for others’ posts and efforts.
An Android version of the app is under development for launch later in 2014.

“GiveGab has again found an innovative, fun and effective way to advance the volunteering experience,” said Renee Miller Zientek, director, Center for Service Learning & Civic Engagement at Michigan State University, which recently beta tested the new technology.  “This app may very well set the standard for socially connecting volunteers, institutions and charitable organizations on multiple levels, wherever they are located.”

GiveGab’s mission is to help create more, happy volunteers.  “Earlier this year the federal government reported that volunteerism fell to a 10-year low in 2013, and in fact has declined in each of the last three years,” said GiveGab CEO Charlie Mulligan.  “The service landscape is ever-changing, and our goal is to provide easier, more gratifying and diverse ways for well-intentioned Americans to volunteer.  Our new app does just that – it provides a social, fun and encouraging way for everyone to find great opportunities to share their talents and passion.”

GiveGab Helps in Immediate Aftermath of Tornadoes in Mississippi

The functionality of GiveGab’s tools has already proven useful in less-traditional but important applications, such as during the immediate aftermath of the tornadoes which ravaged large swaths of Mississippi in April.  GiveGab leadership was on the scene, providing its resources to help local authorities track volunteer hours and record contact information of volunteers for future communications.

“When disasters like the recent tornadoes strike, the lack of a well-known and user-friendly technology platform to quickly connect volunteers with meaningful ways to serve is our Achilles heel,” David Mallery, executive director of Volunteer Mississippi.  “GiveGab’s approach, including its new app, has the potential to help officials mobilize volunteers, track the time and activity of a rapidly growing, on-the-ground volunteer network and report that activity to the federal authorities in ways that will save both time and money. GiveGab is the first platform I’ve seen that provides an effective, functional technology that allows volunteers to use devices to interact with the world around them in ways that are user-friendly, fast and fun.”
